3D Computer Aided Design (Rhinos)

Compulsory

Semester:

Syllabus:

This module aims to train students in 3D design using a NURBS-based 3-D modelling software commonly used for industrial design, architecture, automotive design, CAD / CAM and rapid prototyping. Students will be trained in free-form non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) modelling. Among the characteristics of Rhinoceros NURBS modelling tool is its low learning curve, allowing new users to have immediate access to advanced modelling tools, given its ease of use and its fast-modelling capabilities. Furthermore, its ability to import and export over 30 file formats also allows the software to act as a ‘converter’ tool between programmes in a design workflow.

With the use of Rhinoceros 3D, students will create, edit, analyse, document, render, animate, and translate NURBS curves, surfaces, and solids with no limits on complexity, degree, or size. The training will include exercises of diverse levels, thus building up complexity, computational geometry skills and precision. The module will include theory lectures about surfaces as well as modelling exercises to put the acquired skills in practice. Focus is given both to precision and velocity of realization of the projects, as the tool can be employed for both production as well as sketching/drafting for product design.
